Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
